Reading together is the whole point of the month. Fifteen minutes a day is a great place to start.

November has a job. It is National Family Literacy Month.

The month is all about families reading and learning together. It kicked off on November 1. That first day has its own name: National Family Literacy Day.

An idea from 1994

The celebration started in 1994. The group behind it is the National Center for Families Learning.

The idea is simple. Kids who see reading at home grow up loving books. Grown-ups get sharper too.

“Fifteen minutes of reading together can change a whole day.”

How libraries join in

Libraries and schools hold special events all month. There are family reading nights, story times, and reading games.

One county library system in California is doing Dinovember. That means dinosaur story times, dino crafts, and a story walk with a Mo Willems book.

Easy ways to join in at home

  • Read together for 15 minutes a day. Take turns doing the voices.
  • Let your child pick the book, even if you have read it 100 times.
  • Take a trip to the library and let everyone grab one book.
  • Tell stories in the car. Making them up counts.

You don't need a plan or a party. A book, a couch, and your kid. That is the whole thing.
